Rebuilding after hurricane melissa
Project closed
On October 28, 2025, Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica as a Category 5 storm with sustained winds of 185 mph—the strongest hurricane ever recorded to hit the island. The slow-moving storm caused catastrophic flooding, landslides, and widespread destruction, especially in western Jamaica.
More than 1.5 million people were impacted, with widespread power outages, damaged infrastructure, destroyed homes, and severe disruption to healthcare and communication services. Many families lost both their homes and livelihoods, creating a long-term humanitarian crisis.
Immediately after the hurricane, a team of PCCR volunteers deployed to Jamaica for two months, providing emergency relief by tarping damaged roofs and assisting affected families.
This year, we are returning to partner with Jamaica Relief Ministries to help rebuild homes lost in the storm and support communities still recovering from its devastation.
What we are doing to help
We are partnering with Jamaica Relief Ministries (JRM) on a follow-up shelter repair and roofing project. Many families are still living with damaged roofs and unsafe housing conditions and have not been able to complete repairs on their own. Building on the relationships and experience from our previous response, we will focus on rebuilding houses for vulnerable households identified through JRM’s local outreach. JRM will help coordinate beneficiary locations and building materials, while our volunteer teams provide the labor and hands-on construction work needed to help families move toward safe and stable living conditions again.
