Since my arrival in Jamaica on November 3rd, there have been many houses that have been tarped, roads cleared, and supply drops and tarp distributions completed. One day that stands out to me is Thursday, December 4th. We were out tarping a roof and giving out tarps to people in a mountain village, when we had to go back to base for more tarps and supplies. There we met a lady that had received a tarp from us that morning, and she told us about Mosey and his family. He had appendix surgery 3 weeks before the hurricane hit and got home 3 days before the storm hit. Unable to repair his own roof they lived in their house with no roof for over a month. When we got to the property we were met by three smiling children. As I entered through the gate his three year old hugged my leg and didn’t want to let go. After talking with Mosey we got started on tarping their roof. As three of our volunteers worked on the roof, two of us stayed on the ground to hand up stuff and keep the children occupied. After the roof was completed we were all on the ground with the children. We gave them all hugs and some candy, said our goodbyes and were on the way to help more people.
One thing I have been challenged with since being here is being content with what we have. These people lost everything and yet are very grateful for the fact that they have life. At one of the houses we worked on the owner told us as long as they have life, the rest is bonuses.
As we continue to serve the people of Jamaica that have been affected by the hurricane, your prayers would be greatly appreciated.
