“We don’t have anywhere to go”. The elderly man had come over from a neighboring house when we had come to evacuate their neighbors. I was trying to convince him to evacuate with us but this was his answer. “There is also a bedfast grandma in the next house, She is also not leaving.” When I asked if I can go talk with her he said “She doesn’t have anywhere to go” and “just let us decide for ourselves”. I left it at that.
Later we evacuated an injured man who had been injured by an explosion. And yet people will stay because the unknown looks more uncertain than living in danger.
The work continues, there are still people living in these areas where there is constant drone activity. As the drone technology continues to progress the area becomes more dangerous. The drones fly farther and even remotely set land mines along the road. But people choose to stay as long as they possibly dare to.
Because of this there continues to be a need for volunteers to go evacuate them, as they decide they are ready to leave. To leave their home means to leave normal life. Its difficult to find a home. And for many of the elderly they have no funds to pay for rent, and they aren’t able to work anymore. There are programs to resettle them but of course its not desirable to spend the rest of their life in refugee shelters. The war cruelly continues to tear lives apart. Pray for these people and pray for peace in Ukraine.
