Going home is such a beautiful thing, and I am blessed to have the opportunity to do so as we wrapped up the Jamaica Rebuild Project. But for so many, that’s only a memory or a dream.
Returning to the island once again in May was so incredibly fulfilling. This time to provide a solid home to families and individuals who had lost theirs over 8 months ago, through Hurricane Melissa. Wherever we went, the needs were evident, as we found more people still trying to get their lives together.
One guy shared how he should have died as he held onto the rafters as his roof started to be ripped away. Another had lost his leg to an infection since the hurricane.
Each story was filled with pain and sadness, yet there’s always a silver lining.
Through my time there, I experienced so many moments that made me stop and thank God for what I have.
Seeing a family step inside their tiny new 224-square-foot plywood home full of gratefulness. Their faces glowed when we handed them a Bible after it had been lost in the hurricane. Or watching them plan how they’d finish the doors & windows and move in…
For us, it seemed like a small thing to build them a home, but to them, it was more than they could have dreamed of!
Each home started with a prayer for the day and ended with us circling up inside to bless them and their home. Each of the individuals we built for saw the hands & feet of Jesus at work.
Thank you to JRM for providing materials and local support to make this possible! It’s been an incredible project, and one where each of our volunteers walked away blessed.
