One of our vehicles took a direct hit from a fiberoptic drone while on a routine evac run on the front lines. After getting hit, the vehicle burned out and is a total loss. One of our team members was driving the vehicle and sustained some injuries from the explosion, but we’re grateful for God’s protection… that no lives were lost and the injuries were not more severe. Our prayers are with the team in Ukraine, for healing and God’s peace and presence to be with them during this difficult time.
Some moments out here stay with you forever, whether you want them to or not.
That day we were working in a hot zone with two Ukrainian cops and a news reporter, moving between several locations. After checking those areas, we headed back to a block post, grabbed what we needed, and went in again for another run.
That was the moment everything changed.
As we slowed around a curve, a fiber-optic drone struck without warning. It hit so fast there was no time to react—just a split second where everything turns into noise, instinct, and trying to figure out who’s alive and able to move. I don’t remember everything, only fragments, but I know God had His hand over us the whole time.
One of the cops had some glass in his nose but is doing well. The reporter and the other officer walked away without injuries, which I am incredibly thankful for. I had glass in my face and left hand, and a cut with more glass in my right leg. I am also pretty sure I have a concussion.
Even after getting out of immediate danger, the adrenaline doesn’t let go. The more I look back, the more my mind runs through all the different scenarios—how quickly it could have gone another way, how close it really was, and how much worse it could have ended.
But through all of that, I’m incredibly thankful. Thankful that we walked away with hardly any injuries. Thankful everyone made it out. And most of all—thankful to God for His protection in a moment where we needed it most.
