Expectations & Guidelines – Jamaica Rebuild
Throughout this document, any individual who has taken the PCCR training will be referred to
as a Graduate, while those who have not will be referred to as a Volunteer.
Volunteers:
Any volunteers who wish to serve on the project will need to be in some way connected with
PCCR through friendship, community, or family relations.
Volunteers coming in will be expected to coordinate with the project leader in Jamaica before booking their flights.
Flight costs are estimated to be $400-$700 round-trip per person. All volunteers are responsible for paying for their own flights.
A general pack list will be provided to you, and recommended supplies that you should bring along. You may also be asked to bring along basic tools or supplies that the team might need, and if so, a list will be provided.
For all volunteers, a suggested donation of $30 per day is requested to help cover some of the costs to keep the project going. This will cover your accommodation, main meals, and transportation while in Jamaica. Any snacks, eating out, weekend trips, etc., will be the responsibility of each individual. Starlink WiFi will be provided at the base and, where possible, in each vehicle.
Graduates will assist with airport pickup, provide money exchange, and conduct orientation.
Volunteers will be integrated into the PCCR teams and will operate together and alongside them throughout the duration of the project.
Vehicles:
All the vehicles we run are rented privately, and must be returned in the same condition they were received. All individuals are responsible for keeping the vehicles clean and organized.
In the event of an incident or any damage to the vehicle, stop and take photos/videos straight away! Any damage that occurs must be reported immediately to the project leader!
Each individual is responsible for paying for any damage caused, aside from any wear and tear not associated with the driver.
Accommodation:
We have been extremely blessed and have set up a temporary base just outside the city of Montego Bay, where you will be accommodated together with the team in a large modern apartment. All the essentials, including wash facilities, are available to use during your stay.
Leadership Structure:
The PCCR project leader is the final authority on the ground and will work closely with our local contacts at Jamaica Relief Ministries, who are providing connections and the bulk of the materials for rebuilding. You may also have a crew leader who will report directly to the project leader.
If at any point you are not being heard by on-the-ground leadership, you have the right to reach out to PCCR’s Operations Director, Mervin Beiler.
General Information:
Graduates and Volunteers are expected to be flexible and ready to serve where needed and open to shifting focus as the needs change.
Nothing moves fast here, and you will need to be ready to wait and move at the locals’ pace, prioritizing relationships over efficiency.
‘Island time’ may be frustrating, but taking things as they come and being flexible to changing plans multiple times throughout the day is key.
Be sensitive and respectful of the cultural norms and the people who have suffered a lot.
Remember, people are our main mission. Listen to their stories, give them the space to talk.
Sometimes that means more than anything else. They have been living through a difficult time.
And pray with the people whenever you get a chance!
What may appear as trash to us may be highly prized and valued by the people. And often it is not about what got done, it is about how we connected with the people.
Liability:
Understand that you are volunteering at your own risk and will not hold PCCR responsible for any accidents or damage incurred to yourself, your property, or anyone on your team and their property.
