Myanmar; The Effects of Cultural Beliefs

It’s hard to put into words how to describe the last several weeks of living in Myanmar. There’s so much beauty in the people, the floating villages out on the lake, and the sun setting over the mountains. Yet, alongside that, there is a dark heaviness.

Part of their belief is to always be doing good so that there is no bad karma. During a conversation with some of the locals, one of them looked over at their friend and said, “You must have done something really good to have PCCR come to our village and help us.” That struck me.

Even when trying to do everything right, suffering still finds its way in, making it feel hopeless. Yet somehow, there is a tangible hope that maybe someday the disasters will stop, the military coup will end, and there will be peace.

My prayer is that in the midst of the suffering, we could show them Jesus—the One who brings true Hope and Peace. A Hope that doesn’t promise a life without suffering, but offers peace from within, and the assurance that they are not alone.
