Louisiana: Update From The Ground

As we arrived in Simmesport and drove through town, at first glance you wouldn’t notice a lot of damage. This flood was different from the kind most people picture. It wasn’t caused by a fast-moving river pushing through town carrying mud and debris. Instead, it was the result of an incredible amount of rain falling faster than the water could drain away.

Many areas in Avoyelles Parish received more than 20 inches of rain in less than 36 hours, with some locations estimated to have seen 24 to 30 inches in an 18- to 24-hour period. The rainfall led to catastrophic flooding throughout communities including Plaucheville, Mansura, and areas around Simmesport. Some meteorologists described the event as historic and potentially among the highest 24-hour rainfall totals ever recorded in Louisiana.

Because the water rose in place and then slowly receded, it didn’t leave behind the thick layers of mud that are common after river flooding. But if you look closer you will see bricks on homes are still dark from the water line, and along the roads you will see piles of mattresses, cabinets, furniture, and other belongings as some families begin the difficult work of cleaning out their homes and starting over.

Even though the damage isn’t immediately obvious as you drive through town, many residents are facing the hard reality of rebuilding their homes and replacing much of what was lost. Please keep the people of Simmesport and the surrounding communities in your prayers as they begin the long process of recovery.
